So far, NARDEP has designed two models, the Social Facilitation Model and the Buntu Village Market, a Revenue Generating Profit Share Scheme. The social mobilisation model has been benchmarked and tested through a pilot program. The Buntu Village Market on the other hand is new and has yet to be tested.
The Social Facilitation Model was benchmarked through a presentation to the ‘Rural Development in South Africa’ Conference sponsored and organised by the South Africa High Commission in London, Nov 2002. It was tested through a pilot programme in two provinces in South Africa. The conference was attended by Local Government Authorities and NGO representatives, most of which were involved in local and overseas development work. The presentation was delivered in conjunction with the Integrated Sustainable Rural Development Strategy(ISRDS) delivered by an official from the Department of Provincial and Local Government.
The conference noted that NARDEP was compatible with the ISRDS as a skills development component. The model was acclaimed ‘ground breaking contribution’ to community development practise since the Grameen Bank Micro-Finance Model which was developed in Bangladesh years back.
The NARDEP Model was also tested through a pilot programme supported by Kagiso Trust, the Kellogg Foundation and Stewart Mott Foundation(2003 – 2006) in 4 Municipal Wards, 2 in the Sikhukhuni District Municipality, Makhudutamaga and Fitagomo Local Municipalities, Limpopo; and 2 in Amathole District Municipality, Buffalo City and Amahlathi Municipalities, Eastern Cape.
